Everything went fine at with the surgery. Tooth is out, I’m mostly lucid not much pain, at least until the local wears off. The gauze in my mouth sucks.

We got up early to be at the DMV this morning so my son could get his license. Then he drove himself to school, f irst time he’s driven alone. He parked, went inside to get his parking permit, and came out to find a hole had been smashed in the sunroof of the Civic. Now sure how this could have been an accident. Looks to me like somebody hit it with a rock or a hammer. As he drove home, the entire thing spiderwebbed and more of it caved in. And to top it all off, we haven’t had rain here for six weeks at least and today it’s raining. Any my garage is too full of crap to allow it to be parked there. We’ve covered it as best as we can, but water always finds a way.

Kinja'd!!!

The initial hole that my son discovered

Kinja'd!!!

How it spread by the time we got home. The initial hole is at the bottom.

He and my wife are going back to talk to the SRO and see if there is any security camera footage. I’m having a hard time believing this is an accident.

Do I have to go to Honda to get this repaired, or will Safelite or Binswanger or somebody fix this?

Dammit.

I believe safelite does work like this. But more likely than not its probably gonna be at honda. But seriously what a shitty thing to happen that definitely looks like vandalism.

high schoolers suck. my car was keyed multiple times. I suspect my lack of care (as it was a POS) resulted in them not doing it in secret, they started waiting for me to show up then keying it in front of me. yay bullies.

lots of schools have cameras on their parking, any chance the school can help identify what happened?

ahh, having typed this last sentence I went back to you post and saw you were planning the same.

My wife is at the school talking with the SRO. He said he went through an hour of tape but didn’t see anything. There were guys working with weed whackers and mowers. I suppose it’s possible that the big riding mower tossed a rock. Pretty freak accident if so.

Damn! That sucks! that’s a pretty random occurrence to have happen, and I can’t see how there’s anything your son did that could have caused it! Hopefully there’s some security camera footage so you know what happened? I bet it’s not going to be cheap though...th ose panels are often bonded to the runners they use for opening and closing...

This should be easy to remove  and install the replacement glazing. I did a new seal on an Integra sunroof and it’s like, a handful of bolts IIRC. Very DIY-able. The hard part will be getting all of the broken glass out of the rails or mechanism.

I suspect they just sucked. They did verbally say that the reasoning was that my crappy car shouldnt be parked near their nice cars in the good parking lot, that I belonged in the dirt lot further away. I went to a school in a wealthy mountain area, so numerous brand new porsches and such in the student lot. a contrast to my then decade old subaru.

also got in trouble for risking a football players chances at playing in the big game that week because he beat me up... so like... it was as if a high school TV drama had c ome to life. I was dumbfounded.

Super shitty, sorry to hear. And what a crappy first day of driving alone for your son too. Hope he doesn’t feel too badly about this.

Is this a fixed sunroof or one that opens and closes? When we lived in SF my wife’s Liberty got broken in to through the moonroof (who does this?!) - cheapest option was to find a replacement panel online , repair it myself (was pretty easy, just some screws on and off), and vacuum the car as best as I could (esp make sure you’re not leaving any glass behind in the railings) . If you can get it taped up and keep it dry for the time being might be an option if it’s something that looks relatively easy.

Wow, the worst things that ever happened at my school was a friend had his Cougar completely filled top to bottom with snow (but he actually walked in on it while they were doing it, and helped them finish, so I don't think he cared?) plus another friend had someone take a dump on the windshield of his Integra, but he knew who did it and somehow thought it was funny.

The worst part of replacing any tempered auto glass is the cleanup. You almost never find all the pieces at first.

I had a rear quarter window break in my 09 Forester from highway debris, but the factory tint seemed to hold it together (I continued for 50 or so miles that way, probably not advisable).

My dad had a front passenger window shatter on his 01.5 Passat in zero degree weather just from closing the door. We were still finding pieces of glass for several years after the fact.

so punches thrown, crowd gathered, I was hauled away by the collar of my shirt my some teacher. the multiple football players involved were not reprimanded.

My brother in law had the same random broken sunroof on his Lexus GX, just out of the blue.

My wife was tailed by a crazy F loridian because “she chucked a rock into her sunroof and broke it” on a dirt road in Colorado.

Learning a lesson very early: cars (and everything related to them) are expensive, and the point of an emergency fund is that there’s just no way to plan for everything...

I suggest this new family saying for when things fail to go as planned:

That sucks man, no idea what goes into replacing that glass but I always recommend against safelite based on awful experience with them.

Heavy plastic and electrical tape may help - yes, electrical tape. It’s waterproof. Do a tidy job (wrinkles in the tape will leak) and it should stay pretty well sealed for a while. Tape may leave some goop behind later but it’s much easier to remove than duct tape residue (which isn’t waterproof in the first place).

Not to lay blame on your son, but if he were my son, we’d be having a lo n g talk. My son has tried to lie to get out of bad situations, but he’s a terrible liar and we usually catch him if we push him a bit.

Could they see the car? Could they tell when it happened?

My aunt was shocked when her son needed a new rear tire. She ignored the fact that it was the right-rear tire and the wheel well was lined with bits of rubber. Apply Occam’s razor. If the hole is big, there wasn’t a rock to be found, the cameras didn’t see any reason for the broken sunroof....

I’d hate to think my son would have damaged his own truck, but I’ve already seen him run over two curbs. One of his buddies is now carless. I asked what happened. The kid turned left in front of somebody and was hit. He still insists it wasn’t his fault.

I hope you guys figure it out and it wasn’t your son or one of his buddies.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > TheRealBicycleBuck

I have absolutely no reason to suspect that he had anything to do with it. There is video of him getting out of the car and meeting with a friend . I don’t know if there’s video of him returning to the car with his friend. At this point, I have absolutely no reason not to believe him.

That said, I was about his age when I was driving around with friends in my parent’s Caprice when I stopped paying attention and hit a curb, blowing the tire. I changed it, then went home and told my parents that I was driving and somebody crossed the centerline and I swerved to avoid him. It was a damn lie, of course. But my brother was the problem child back then, and I generally skated under the radar.

That said, I really have no reason to doubt him or his friend who was with him. Everything was fine when they parked, and they discovered it when thy got back outside. My son did say that he found a piece of rock on the roof, but he threw it in frustration. He and his mom went to look for it, but ther e was other debris in the lot. Looking at where and how he was parked, I’m not sure I buy the lawnmower theory . My best guess is that some dumbass was throwing rocks and hit our car. Though again, there is no video evidence. The SRO said she “watched a full hour of video,” but she probably really just fast forwarded through it to look for somebody by the car.

Since this was not a driving incident, we will meet with an adjustor. I imagine he/she will try to find liability elsewhere. I’d love to watch that security video at regular speed. I’m not sure what it shows, where it was shot from, how much it can see. It would be nice if the adjustor can find some liability, since we have a $1,000 deductible on the comprehensive.

It sucks when stuff like this happens.

I had a number of incidents over the years. I wrecked someone else’s motorcycle. I wrecked my own truck within the first few months of driving.  I blew out the back window of my mom’s car (I didn’t measure the load right and it hit the rear glass when I closed the hatch). I warped TWO heads in two incidents by letting my truck overheat (the first time really wasn’t my fault). The list could go on and on....
